Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
IBS is a functional gastrointestinal disorder, meaning the digestive tract looks normal, but doesn’t function properly. Symptoms may come and go and can be triggered by food, stress, or hormonal changes.
A proper evaluation is important to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms.
The exact cause of IBS is not fully understood. Symptoms may be influenced by changes in intestinal movement, increased sensitivity in the digestive tract, stress, certain foods, previous intestinal infections, or changes in gut bacteria.
Dr. Tieng will review your symptoms, medical history, diet, medications, and bowel habits. Blood tests, stool tests, or other testing may be recommended to rule out conditions that can cause similar symptoms.
Colonoscopy or upper endoscopy is not routinely required for every patient with IBS. These procedures may be recommended when symptoms, age, family history, or warning signs suggest that another condition should be investigated.
During your first visit, Dr. Tieng will ask about the pattern and duration of your symptoms, possible food triggers, stress, and how your digestive problems affect daily life. Together, you will discuss whether testing is needed and develop an individualized plan for managing your symptoms.
