Procedures
A colonoscopy examines the entire colon to screen for colorectal cancer, remove precancerous polyps, and evaluate symptoms such as bleeding, changes in bowel habits, or unexplained anemia.
An upper endoscopy examines the esophagus, stomach, and beginning of the small intestine. It may be recommended for persistent heartburn, swallowing difficulties, upper abdominal pain, nausea, bleeding, or unexplained anemia.
Esophageal dilation gently widens a narrowed area of the esophagus that may be causing food to stick or making swallowing difficult. It is often performed during an upper endoscopy.
Flexible sigmoidoscopy examines the rectum and lower portion of the colon. It may be used to evaluate rectal bleeding, inflammation, changes in bowel habits, or other lower digestive symptoms.
