Ulcerative Colitis
Ulcerative colitis is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks the colon lining, causing inflammation. It typically involves flare-ups followed by remission.
Though there is no cure, treatment can effectively control symptoms.
Dr. Tieng will review your symptoms, medical history, medications, and previous test results. Blood tests, stool studies, and colonoscopy with biopsies may be recommended to confirm the diagnosis, determine how much of the colon is affected, and assess the severity of inflammation.
During a flare, symptoms such as diarrhea, bleeding, urgency, and abdominal pain may become more frequent or severe. Contact Dr. Tieng’s office if your symptoms worsen, return after a period of remission, or no longer respond to your current treatment.
Seek urgent medical care for severe or continuous bleeding, signs of dehydration, persistent fever, severe abdominal pain or swelling, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
Treatment depends on the severity and extent of inflammation and may include anti-inflammatory medications, immune-modifying therapies, dietary support, and ongoing monitoring. The goal is to control inflammation, relieve symptoms, heal the colon, and maintain long-term remission.
Continued follow-up is important even when symptoms improve. Regular monitoring can help identify ongoing inflammation, adjust treatment when necessary, and reduce the risk of future complications.
