Does food feel as though it is sticking in your throat or chest when you swallow? Difficulty swallowing may be caused by narrowing of the esophagus and should be evaluated to identify the cause and determine whether treatment is needed.
Esophageal dilation gently stretches narrowed areas of the esophagus to help food and liquids pass more comfortably.
Esophageal dilation is a procedure that gently widens a narrowed area of the esophagus. Narrowing may be caused by scar tissue from acid reflux, inflammation, esophageal rings, strictures, or other conditions.
The procedure is often performed during an Upper Endoscopy, allowing Dr. Tieng to examine the esophagus and treat the narrowed area during the same visit.
Esophageal dilation may be recommended for:
- Difficulty swallowing food or liquids
- Food feeling stuck after swallowing
- Pain or pressure while swallowing
- Esophageal strictures caused by scar tissue
- Esophageal rings
- Narrowing related to chronic acid reflux or inflammation
During the procedure, Dr. Tieng carefully stretches or widens the narrowed portion of the esophagus. Most patients return home the same day.
Temporary throat soreness, mild chest discomfort, bloating, or tenderness when swallowing may occur and usually improves within a short period.
You will need to stop eating and drinking for a specified period before the procedure. The office will provide instructions about fasting and whether any medications need to be adjusted.
Yes. Sedation is generally used, so a responsible adult must drive you home. You should not drive, return to work, or make important decisions for the remainder of the day.
Some patients improve after one dilation, while others may need additional procedures depending on the cause and severity of the narrowing.
